Climate Bali is a "unique opportunity", says Ban Ki-moon

SANTIAGO (AFP) - The upcoming UN conference on climate change in Bali represents a "unique opportunity", said Friday the United Nations Secretary General Ban Ki-moon at the Iberoamerican Summit in Santiago, Chile.


The Bali conference, held in December to open negotiations for a new international agreement to succeed the Kyoto Protocol which expires in 2012.
"This is a unique opportunity to add substance" to the Kyoto Protocol, "said Ban Ki-moon, noting that climate change was" a challenge for everyone. "


"This is the opportune time to take action globally and reach an agreement," said Secretary General of the UN who will travel Friday to Punta Arenas in southernmost Chile, a region that is at the vertical of a gigantic hole in the ozone layer.
From there, he must go to Antarctica to visit bases Chilean, Uruguayan and Korean and receive information on the effects of global warming from scientists.
