Thau lagoon: fishing and the gathering of some shellfish prohibited

AFP - Friday, November 9, 3:03 p.m.

MONTPELLIER (AFP) - Pickup and mussel shells and burrowing (shell clam) from the Etang de Thau were banned Friday by the prefect of the Herault, due to toxicity resulting from the presence of micro-algae, Alexandrium.

The order of the prefect also restricts the marketing of shellfish harvested before the publication of the order.

Thus, producers who have spent their shells in purification tanks are required to recall their goods.

Oysters from the Etang de Thau are not affected by the bans, says the release of the prefecture.

These are tests carried out by Ifremer on mussels from the pond showed that toxicity.

According to the website of IFREMER, several species of Alexandrium were observed in the French coastal waters, including the toxic species Alexandrium minutum and Alexandrium tamarense / catenella.

In the Thau lagoon, the latter species develops, according to the website of IFREMER.
